WoW: Why We Play

The breakfast topic over at wow.com the other day, was about late night wow sessions.
It got me reminiscing about all nighters, fun times, and the ingredients that keep me logging into the game over and over again...

My most memorable nights started after I made my DK at 55. I had started playing WoW with my friend Ant, but by the time we hit 55, he had found other means to occupy his time. From the DK forward, I flew solo; spending each night questing through a different zone, learning the game, and seeing new, beautiful landscapes for the first time.

But once the questing was over, the game started to change.

I found myself actually looking at the green text chat, and engaging in conversations.

I downloaded vent.

And thats when I fell in love with the game.

I've always had an inherent need to storm the last castle and save the princess--but WoW's story is always changing. Each and every penultimate challenge merely one more chapter in the tale. So, unlike other games that get played, and beat, and then rest upon the shelf until a feeling of nostalgia persuades me to rediscover the story-- this game, and its characters, interweave themselves in a very complex way. Characters are not defined by the events that happen in-game, but are intrinsically developed by the people behind them: their wants, desires, emotions, frustrations--all interwoven between earth and azeroth, dynamically change the way people and gameplay intersect.

People enter and exit from the story; some quietly, others dramatically. And as relationships among characters develop and evolve, we find ourselves (I find myself) logging on, not to rescue a princess, but rather to see how the other story unfolds...

For me, friendship is the backbone of the game's success. While I enjoy raiding, and PvP, the pixels on the screen aren't what keeps me attached to the game. It's the people.

It's Darth-- who is a wealth of both useful and useless information. That remembers fight mechanics photographically, and has knowledge of every spec and every class.

It's Whoa--who I still remember running around as a little boom-chicken when I levelled my fishing, whispering me about EZ- E and Snoop Dogg, and partyin' in the barrio.

It's Haz--just cause he's old and I miss my Great Great Great Grandpa--just kidding.

It's Di--who's single handedly reintroduced me to PvP, and who has stood by me since Sated's conception. Whose become a really close friend, and is one of my absolute, favorite people...

If it weren't for these people, the game wouldn't mean nearly as much as it has. It's been these people (along with others--not forgetting you, Bu and Stink) that create the opportunities for memorable moments; a late night vezax kill, dueling in dresses in front of Org, soloing the pit at 70, levelling to the wee hours of the morning--chatting over vent and really getting to know someone....

  1. i hope that these people mean as much to you as you say they do, because if you do things the way you have been you are only gonna have those people by your side. even moving over to a normal pop server is only gonna postpone the death of your guild. i hope you enjoy the rest of your adventures on your new server and i hope that the saps you get to join your guild over there will know what there getting into.
    cheers.

  2. May Sated's death be quick and painless...

And thank you, Mr. Anonymous, for your insight into guild leadership, and your poignant dissection for the reason it's "dying."

On the other hand, kinda says a lot when more than a dozen others want to transfer with you, without hesitation, don't ya think?

    Happy pugging =)

  3. I always wonder about comments like this... do they think that they provide some sort of epiphimous occasion for us: "OMG... you are SO right... we're all complete a-holes!!! THANK YOU KIND STRANGER!" Or is it some sort of futile, cathartic attempt to denigrade others in a way that makes their own pitiful, sad lives seem less dim? Either way, I find it amusing. Thanks for the laughs, Blood Furnace.

  4. Ignoring the misguided and hateful comments of a stranger, this was a thought with a lot of good vibes and a sentiment that probably holds true to a lot of players of a game that can be so much more.

  5. ok, i take that back, your guild may never die. but you will never reach the heights to have a constant 25 raid team. iv been in this guild sense it was made. i have seen teams come and ultimately go. unless you plan on having the other members govern themselves (which in that case wouldn't it be smarter for them to have there own guild. which most of them left to create) they will keep leaving you. that is what you have been doing the entirety of my membership. you have a favorite group of people in this guild and you play those favorites. leaving the others to fend for themselves. also your loot rules are haggard. if i remember right (which i dont), but it goes something like participation, something something something, gear, something else. its a vicious cycle. you cant get the gear if you dont go but you cant go if you dont have the gear. and if you do go the ones that are already there have dibs... but whatever i dont care much about the gear stuff, but some did. i just wanted as much respect as you give your core players. example: i was gone from this game for i think 2 weeks or something like that. when i got back i found that i was demoted from raider to like something very low i dont remember. i couldnt even touch the gbank. and i bet after woah gets back from his hiatus he will be exactly where he was. and will be able to jump right back into those 10s with you. same rank and all. favorites.

have you guessed who this is? zogarg. i know. who? right?

  6. Zogarg-

You're right, Sated will not die =)

Myself, nor many of the other officers, did not abandon anyone to lead their own group. Whoever was leading the group, chose to do so. And even then, I and others were asking if they needed help to set up their group and we were always open to answer any questions. When we are met with no responses or are told that things are under control, we assume that things are just that.

Loot rules were put in place in order to see gear distributed evenly and to ensure that gear is used affectivley. Why should gear go to people who show up to raid once a month over someone who raids every week? Why should healing gear go to a DPS? Why should one person, who is lucky enough to win every roll, leave everyone else out in the cold? What are the chances that you will hit that streak of luck yourself? It is clear why you don't understand this though, since you hardly raided with us.

I assure you that the reason you were demoted during your two week hiatus, is that a member got hacked. In which case every single Sated member was demoted (even officers) in order to limit access to the guild bank. Did you ever ask to get promoted back to raider? Or question why you were demoted?

    Best Wishes,

    Di

  7. Ahhh, Zo-- what's up dude? Hate to say this man, but, your opinion doesn't exactly count. In fact, you kinda make my point. Teams have come and gone--candies group left, but then they themselves couldn't even keep their 10 together for a week. Eneko's group died because she didn't want guild resources--we were just waiting for that to happen. I understand that you're upset about not getting into a 10 man that last week you were on--but the thing is, your attendance was so sporadic that no one even knew you weren't tanking anymore. The truth is, I do play favorites. The dozen or so people that are transferring are committed to the guild. They log on consistently for raids, help guildies, and want to succeed. I want to have 12 more just like em. The problem is, that some people, who really should consider themselves casuals, want raid spots whenever they log on, when their effort is minimal. You can't succeed in current tier raids with players whose attendance you can't count on from one day to the next. So no hard feelings. I just hope you're able to find a guild that will give you a raid spot, should you decide to log on.

  8. the thing about the 10 man is not what made me leave, it was just the last straw. other than that 2 week break i took. i am on pretty much all day every day. i wasn't there when 10s where decided to be done always on tuesday so when i didn't see anything on the calendar i just made other plans. most times when i heard word that there was a raid i followed the rules. i didn't get into anything 15min prior to invites. i read and signed the post about the new rules on here. what more do you want? and you cant deny that every time there was an "alt" run on sundays and it was put on crypt's calender i was there.

and when you guys pitched a bitch about us pugging (which listed above reminds you that i wasn't aware of the tuesday raid schedule). we left. cleared all the puggers from your vent and had to send some disappointed fellow puggers on there way, you didn't even say we where not getting a spot untill i had to bring it up. you said you thought i was tanking and that you needed a tank. that's whatever. but what about sheath? you made him leave too and you cant through the same bullshit around on that. rogues can only do one thing... also about enekos group. eneko told me the night of that raid that you guys pretty much leave group 2 out to dry.

i told hazl that i wanted to start going in as ret a long time ago. right after that first "alt" sunday run. he asked me if my dps gear was good enough and i honestly said no. but after a few toc's i told him i should be good to go. he said to ask and we could put something together. i didn't want to bother anyone so i took it into my own hands. and i took care of it. non of that matters really. just that someone was told is the point i guess.

also. you said that candies group couldnt keep there 10 together. well thats just what im getting at. when you dont have enough ppl for 2 10s its nice to alternate a little. get the other members of the remains of that other 10 into yours. dont just be like "ohp, you dont have enough? well hell i guess you better pug cause mines full.."

  10. Zog-

None of us recall you being on everyday. If you had been, we would have known you were no longer a tank and you would have known we changed our raiding schedule, since it had been changed several weeks ago.

In reference to Candie's group, what Chris meant is that she did not have the same people invited every week, due to no shows. In which case, she asked us if she could invite friends to the raid who were not members of the guild, which we were all ok with. When it comes down to it, we had too many casual raiders.

I really am sorry that I asked you to leave the ICC raid that you were in so that you could run with the guild, when that ultimately did not happen... Eneko had a practically empty 10man she was setting up, I assumed you and Sheath would go with her.. When I saw her bringing in new guild members, I stated in guild chat several times that she needed to bring "veteran" guild members (Sheath and yourself) to her raid over these new people. If she chooses not to, there is not much anyone can do.. Once again, officers were asking her what she needed and what she had. I tried to coordinate Adam to heal for her group, talking to both Adam and her about it. That is a far cry from "leaving her out to dry". I am truly sorry you did not get in that raid, once I saw what happened I felt terrible (even ask Chris lol).

I'm sorry things did not work out better, we all like you Zog.

  11. you guys wouldn't know if i was a tank whether i played every second or not. i haven't tanked any raid sense ulduar was new. so it has been a long time. i admit that i should of said that i don't like to tank and would like to start dpsing but i knew that the guild was already melee heavy. so i didn't bother. also a secret i kept to myself when ever i was asked to bring crypts in for the range, is that i hate crypts. i wanted to help fill out a balanced team to help get further over my own wants and goals. if that's not "commitment" idk what is.

that day of the 10s if you had said anything other than to tell me off about pugging must of been in officer chat because i saw nothing. me and sheath sat there in silence for (give or take) 20mins. i would of sat there even longer until sheath pointed out that the two vent spaces where full.

what you said chris ment about candies group is exactly what i described lol. she didn't have enough so she had to bring in non guild folk to fill it. (aka pugs) that's the kind of situation where for example you bring say, candies in instead of say, buick. alternate every week to raise the heights of the guild not just a 10.

what you may or may not have told to eneko about bringing us into hers i don't have room to say. but the things she was telling me were a lot like the views i had in the back of my head for a while. i know its hard to be a guild leader. i know that things can get misinterpreted or seen as unfair to the victims. sheath was telling me of the favoritism and things of the like and for the longest time i would tell him, you know they probably just don't need any melee or we got on a little to late. just hang in there we'll get a spot in one of these sometime... we have been pugging for months :/

now i'm not looking to piss anyone off or even for an apology. i just want you to see things from my and many others point of view and maybe just give it some thought. im sorry if i had made anyone mad at me or whatever. i like you guys too as peaple. if it means anything i considered you guys some of my best friends on wow. im just the quiet type (well exept for all this XD)

  12. We aren't mad at you Zog =)

Perhaps you should speak up more, I don't know anyone who is a mind reader and you know the saying "Assuming makes an ass of you and me" =p Perhaps we (officers) should have been more aware of issues people were facing, but still, no one spoke up so how are we supposed to effectively handle all situations.

We will take the information you gave us, and use it to help Sated become a top competing guild on the new realm.

Thank you, and we wish you the best of luck!!!
